Barry Ferguson identifies the Rangers relationship that helps make Steven Gerrard Leeds United boss candidate

Barry Ferguson has tipped Steven Gerrard to get back into management and believes Leeds United would be a good fit for the former Rangers manager.

Leeds United are on the hunt for a new boss after sacking American Jesse Marsch last week following a poor run of results at Elland Road. A number of managers across Europe and in Argentina have been linked with the job but the Leeds hierarchy has yet to fill the role. Ange Postecoglou's name has been touted as a replacement but Celtic assistant John Kennedy said the Australian is focused on the job in hand at Parkhead.

Liverpool legend Gerrard has been out the dugout since being sacked by Aston Villa in October last year. Since departing Villa Park he has been linked with a number of managerial vacancies including the Poland national team. Rayo Vallecano head coach Andoni Iraola and Feyenoord's Arne Slot emerged as favourites for the Leeds job after another reported target, Carlos Corberan, signed a new contract with West Brom on Tuesday night. Iraola was refused permission to speak to the Premier League club, while former River Plate boss Marcelo Gallardo is also believed to have turned down the job.

Ferguson, a former Rangers captain, believes Leeds United would be a great fit for Gerrard and his coaching staff due to Gary McAllister's links to the Yorkshire club.

He told Go Radio: "I have no doubt he is a very good manager, Steven Gerrard. He's just had a tough time and it just never worked out in the end at Aston Villa. I hope he gets another opportunity. It was Mark (Guidi) who called it first about Steven Gerrard for Leeds because of the Gary McAllister connection and I don't think it would be the worst appointment ever.

"He has a good presence about him. With him being up in Scotland listening to what he was doing inside the club the way he came across in the press I was really impressed.

" I really hope he gets another opportunity because he done some real good things at Rangers. It was just disappointing the way it ended at Aston Villa but that's football.

"It wouldn't be the worst appointment for Leeds."
