Barry Ferguson explains Alloa exit reasons and insists disappointment has not put him off management

Barry Ferguson insists he has no regrets after quitting Alloa - and has vowed to return to the dug out bigger and better for the experience.

The Rangers legend handed in his notice this afternoon just eight months after leaving Kelty to take over at the Indodrill and with a relegation scrap looming.

Ferguson had targeted taking Alloa back into the Championship after their relegation last season.

But he insists his own high standards were the reason behind his shock exit - which he insists was 100 per cent his own decision.

A poor run of results have left the League One club hovering precariously above the drop zone.

The Wasps have won just one of their last 13 league games and Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to bottom club East Fife leaves them just a single point above the relegation play-off spot where Peterhead have two games in hand - and 10 points off the play-off spots with 11 games remaining.

Ferguson told Record Sport : “There’s no regrets. I wouldn’t have changed anything. It was the right opportunity - I had done what I had to do at Kelty and I felt this was the right one.

“It’s not worked, am I disappointed? Yes. But I will dust myself down and I know I’m a good coach and manager and I will come back from this and it’s not going to put me off management.

“It was 100 per cent my decision. I had a right good discussion with the chairman and he respected my decision.

“I just felt it needed something different.

“I have the fighter instinct but I’m a realist as well. When I realise it’s not going well then I’m not like other people who will just sit about.

“I felt at this stage it’s time for a change. The window is still open for loans so it will allow a new manager to come in and change a few things.

“We just weren’t performing. I wanted to go in and challenge and it’s not worked out that way.

“I’ll take a sabbatical and be a football supporter for a few months - then I’ll see what happens.

“I just feel it needs somebody different. I wasn’t going to get sacked but I’m an honest guy and if I feel it’s not working how I hoped then it’s time for someone else to come and have a go at it.

“I couldn’t have left in any better terms. There’s been a few in the past who have just sat it out. I think he respects that I’m honest. The results have not been good enough and it’s time for someone else to come and change that and try to get them into the play-offs.

“They could 100 per cent still do that.”

Ferguson was appointed at the Indodrill after guiding Kelty into the SPFL last season. He previously managed Clyde and had a spell as interim boss at Blackpool.

Chairman Mike Mulraney said “I have huge respect for Barry and appreciate the effort he has given the club this season.

“Whilst I share Barry’s disappointment in our performances over the last few weeks I have nothing but praise for his endeavour and commitment to the club in his time with us.

“His professionalism and dedication has been a credit to him and he leaves with our best wishes and thanks.”
