Post-match, Ferguson spoke out on the incident. He said [TNT]: "Looking back, I can see why the referee gave a red card.
"We had to drop deep with two banks of four [after]. People had to put a shift in, and they did.
"There was a real collectiveness."
Ferguson's men eventually earned an admirable goalless draw against the Spaniards.
Liam Kelly's second-half penalty save proved crucial. Ferguson explained his decision to start to the backup goalkeeper ahead of first-choice stopper Jack Butland pre-match: "It wasn't a knee-jerk reaction, in terms of making my decision on Saturday night, I thought long and hard about," he said.
"I spoke with Jack, I explained my decisions behind it, he wasn't happy, if I'm being honest with you, but I don't mind that.
"He understood I had to make a decision. I've went with Liam. Since I have come in Liam has trained really well.
"People need to remember, I still believe in Jack, Jack is still a top goalkeeper. I get on really well with him but I have to make decisions."
