Barrhead Farmfoods to close after 30 years in cost-of-living blow to shoppers

One of Barrhead’s best-known stores is to close after 30 years in the town.

The shutters at Farmfoods will come down for the last time at the end of this month.

And the latest blow to Barrhead’s retail scene is also set to hit cash-strapped families hard – as many of them have used the Main Street store for affordable shopping.

The decision to close was made as Farmfoods’ lease at the site is coming to an end – and it is understood there are no plans to reopen elsewhere in the East Renfrewshire town.

Alistair Kay, Farmfoods’ property director, told the Paisley Daily Express: “We are grateful to all of our customers who have shopped with us over the 30 years we have occupied the premises and look forward to being able to welcome them to our other shops nearby, all of which are unaffected.

“Our Barrhead shop will close after a 50 per cent off sale on Sunday, October 30, shortly before our lease expires.

“Our team members will be offered the opportunity to relocate to other locations where possible.”

The nearest Farmfoods is in Peat Road, Nitshill, and there are others in Thornliebank and Paisley.

Rena McGuire, organiser of the Dunterlie Foodshare, said the store’s closure is “a sad state of affairs”.

She insisted: “People are concerned and it’s going to have a dramatic impact on Barrhead.

“We are facing a cost-of-living crisis right before Christmas and, now Farmfoods is closing, a lot of families aren’t going to be able to cope.

“People won’t travel to the Farmfoods in Peat Road. It’s too difficult to get to unless you can drive.

“The cost of food is important to people right now and Farmfoods was a brilliant place for affordable shopping.

“People are really unhappy about this decision.”
