Barrhead light-heavyweight Sean Lazzerini was punch perfect as he sealed an incredible gold medal at the Commonwealth Games after fighting back from a career-threatening injury.
The 25-year-old was beaten in his opening fight at the 2018 Gold Coast games in Australia, before being plagued by injury problems after suffering a broken right hand in 2019.
Despite not having a competitive bout for almost two and a half years, between November 2019 until February 2022, the powerful boxer made the most of his return to the ring by dumping Wales’ Taylor Bevan on a split decision at the Birmingham NEC.
Now Lazzerini insists he can go on to “achieve greatness” in boxing having overcome his injury issues to seal the biggest win of his life.
He said: “It just shows if you’re dedicated and believe in yourself, anything’s possible.
“It’s what I maybe lacked. I didn’t believe in myself as much as I should have.
“Now I have that belief because I know I’m very good and have natural talent. These victories just fuel me and give me more belief.
“I know I can achieve greatness in boxing and it’s what I plan to do in the future.
“It was good to do it for Scotland, myself, Team Lazzerini. I’ve always been patriotic. It’s brilliant to hear Flower of Scotland standing there.
“Boxing is not a team sport but all the boys support each other and we have good coaches and family here. I’ve got a good team behind me.”
