Barretstown transforms former Dublin Bus into exciting play space for children

Barretstown have renovated a Dublin Bus into a special drivable interactive play area for children.

The vehicle was donated by Dublin Bus last year, with its lower deck now operating as a fully equipped play area for children. However, the vehicle is still operational and will represent the children's charity at public events and open days.

The bus made its first public appearance at Wellfest 2022, with the vehicle being a focal point of the festival. The Barretstown Bus will also be used by the charity’s outreach team to engage with local schools and communities.

Clíodhna Ní Fhátharta, Head of Strategic Communications and Engagement at Dublin Bus said: “We were delighted to be able to support Barretstown by donating this bus, which their team have already put to excellent use. Knowing the bus is being used to raise awareness and funds for the amazing work Barretstown do to help children and their families living with serious illnesses is a great source of pride for everyone at Dublin Bus”.

Barretstown offers free therapeutic programmes to children living with serious illnesses. Young people can participate in exciting and adventurous activities on its Kildare campus, with 24 hour medical care available behind the scenes.

The upper deck can also be used by volunteers as a viable space to carry out work. The vehicle is painted with vibrant colours, with word designs etched on to the various windows across the bus.

Dublin Bus released a video showcasing the exciting interior of the bus. Pat Churchard, a bus driver for over 25 years, spoke about how Barretstown provided his family with invaluable support in the past.

He said: “My niece was diagnosed with cancer 11 years ago and her and the family have been through camp at Barretstown. They often say that the hospital treats the illness and Barretstown treats the child, but they also help the family involved.”
