Barratt Group signs deal with Pod Point to put EV chargers into its new homes

Britain’s biggest housebuilder has struck a deal with Pod Point to put electric vehicle hook-ups in its new homes. Pod Point will install EV points in homes in new Barratt Homes, David Wilson Homes and Barratt London brands – representing about two-thirds of the Barratt Developments portfolio.

Back in May, Barratt said forward sales as of April 23 stood at almost 11,525 homes – though a spokeswoman for the deal said they were not saying how many charging points it would cover. However it builds on previous deals between the two firms, under which London-based Pod Point has installed EV home charging infrastructure in more than 3,000 Barratt properties.

Pod Point will also install electric vehicle cabling routes into Barratt’s covered car parks.

Legislation was brought in last year requiring all new residential developments in England which have a parking space – and which have gained planning since last June – to have EV charging points to be installed.

Steven Boyes, chief operating officer at Leicestershire-based Barratt Developments, said: “As the country’s leading national sustainable housebuilder we are committed to helping improve the environment.

“Through this partnership we are ensuring that customers at a range of our new sites around the country are future proofed, equipped with convenient and reliable charging facilities.

“We know that delivering charging facilities for our customers is becoming more important which is why we are extending our partnership with Pod Point to deliver that to them.”

Pod Point chief executive and founder Erik Fairbairn said: “We’re really excited to build on our work with Barratt Developments.

“Their continued trust in us as a business is the result of our expertise in the building sector, our market-leading product, and our ability to deliver at scale across multiple Barratt sites.

“Today, around 80 per cent of all EV charging takes place at home and growing EV charging with Barratt’s is a hugely positive step in enabling customers to choose electric and help decarbonise the UK roads.”

Pod Point says its smart home charging means EV drivers can charge up to 10 times faster than a 3-pin plug.

It has sold more than 195,000 charge points so far across the UK, while its public network has more than 8,200 charging bays at locations including Tesco, Lidl and Center Parcs.
