Bargain supermarket suncream that costs under £3 and rated by Which?

Summer has officially arrived - with many parts of the country basking in the sunshine. As Brits prepare for holidays abroad and a series of forthcoming heatwaves at home, many will be thinking about stocking up on suncream.

Helpfully, today’s Steph’s Packed Lunch featured a segment on the best suncreams to buy for sun protection, according to Which? magazine. The show also featured advice from skincare expert Dr Ifeoma Ejikeme on how often to apply suncream and how much you should use.

She said people should apply a SPF30 or above lotion daily - irrespective of the weather - and then reapply it after two hours.

Dr Ejikeme added that, to get the right amount to put on your face and neck, squirt sun cream thickly along the index and middle fingers on one hand. For the rest of the body, a golf ball sized amount should be applied.

The show then revealed five of the best rated sun creams according to Which? They were:

Asda Protect Moisturising Sun Lotion SPF30 - £2.80

According to Asda’s website, this suncream is easily absorbed and contains vitamin E to help protect against skin cell damage. It also ‘leaves skin hydrated, supple and soft’, offers 24-hour moisturising and ‘protects against premature skin ageing’.

Guests on Steph’s Packed Lunch said it smelled of holidays and melted into the skin. Buy it here

Boots Soltan Kids Protect & Moisturise SPF50 - £4

This lotion has the highest UVA star rating, meaning it offers some of the best protection against the harmful rays that penetrate deep into the skin, causing long-term damage and premature ageing. Guests on the show added it had ‘no tear’ formulation meaning it doesn’t sting the eyes if it runs while swimming. Buy now here

Nivea’s website says this product ‘provides you with long-lasting UVB and 5 Star UVA protection that immediately protects you against sunburn and premature skin ageing alongside providing skin moisture for 48H’. It comes as a spray, roll-on or a lotion.

Calypso Press & Protect Sun Lotion SPF30 - £3.79

According to Calypso, this lotion offers UVA/UVB protection and helps prevent premature ageing. The company’s website adds it ‘is a light, non-greasy and water resistant formula with gentle moisturisers that replenish the natural oils lost by exposure to the sun, wind and water’.

Morrisons Protect & Nourish Sun Spray SPF30 - £3.50

Morrisons says this is a water resistant, non-greasy & fast absorbing spray that protects against UV sunburn. On the show, Dr Ejikeme said that, because it was a spray, you would need to spray an area three times to get fully protected. Buy it now
