Barclays to shut three North East branches as bank announces another 15 closures this year - see full list

Barclays is set to shut three North East branches as it announces a further 15 bank closures across the UK.

The Northumberland branches on Bondgate Within, Alnwick, and Seafield Road, Seahouses, will close in July along with the High Street branch in Yarm, the Mirror reports.

The latest closures come on top of the 69 branches that have already been earmarked to shut. It means Barclays will now close at least 84 banks in 2023.

Affected customers can make cash and cheque deposits, check their balance and withdraw cash at their nearest Post Office.

Barclays said those who need face-to-face support can visit one of its 200 pop-up sites across the UK. Barclays also has ten "banking pods" which are semi-permanent sites that can be moved to different towns and locations based on demand.

A Barclays spokesman said: “As visits to branches continue to fall, we need to adapt to provide the best service for all our customers. Where there is no longer enough demand to support a branch, we maintain an in-person presence through our Barclays Local network, live in over 200 locations, based in libraries, town halls, mobile vans and our new banking pods.

“We also support access to cash with our cashback without purchase service, 24-hour deposit-taking ATMs and by working alongside the Post Office and Cash Access UK.”

Barclays isn't the only bank to confirm branch closures this year, with all other major lenders also shutting up shops. Lloyds Banking Group and NatWest Banking Group last month said they will close at least another 81 branches in 2023. Meanwhile, HSBC said it would shutter 114 banks - around a quarter of its total sites - this year.
