Barclays bank to start charging customers for lost debit cards

Barclays will become the first high street bank to charge customers to replace lost debit cards later this year.

From August, customers who mislay their card, or need to update their details printed on it, will be charged £5 if it's more than once in a year. Most of Barclays' 24 million customers will get their first lost card replacement free, but will incur a fee after that, according to reports on thisismoney.com

There will be no charge if customers need a new card because of of fraud or theft and children with BarclayPlus or Young Person's account, or to those with the bank's basic current account, will not be charged either.

Barclays will send cards by second-class post without charge, to arrive within five working days, or customers can choose first-class delivery for an additional £1.99. Those who need an urgent replacement have the option to pay £12 for a temporary card printed at 150 selected branches, which will be valid for 28 days.

Although Barclays is the first high street bank to charge for replacement cards, fintech banks such as Monzo and Starling, which have no high street branches and are managed entirely by phone app, have been charging for a while. Mobile bank Monzo offers two free replacement cards a year and charges £5 thereafter and Starling customers get one free replacement card each year before being charged a £5 fee.
