Barcelona were 'compiling reports' on Manchester United playmaker Bruno Fernandes before he signed a new deal at Old Trafford, according to The Athletic.
Fernandes has been a standout performer for United ever since his move from Sporting Lisbon during the January transfer window in 2020. The Portuguese sensation has scored 49 goals and provided 39 assists from 118 appearances for United.
As a result of that form, the 27-year-old was rewarded with a pay rise and has signed an extended agreement until 2026. It means United are well protected to rebuff any interest from other clubs.

Before doing so, Barcelona had seemingly earmarked Fernandes as a potential target as they look to rebuild under Nou Camp icon Xavi and having recovered from well-documented financial problems.
Elsewhere, the long-standing search to find a new defensive midfielder has taken a turn. Reports from Record claim Sporting player Joao Palhinha has emerged as an alternative option to Declan Rice.
Having signed Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo before this season, United are set to prioritise at least one recruit in the engine room. One could easily become two as the Old Trafford giants prepare to lose Paul Pogba on a free transfer for the second time.
Amid countless names that have been drummed up by the rumour mill, 12-cap Portugal international Palhinha might be one name to consider. According to the Record article, United are favourites to sign him.
Record were following up a report from Correio da Manha. Palhinha, 26, is valued at around £25m.
