Barcelona look to be cruising into the Champions League semi-finals in some style after brushing aside Borussia Dortmund in ruthless fashion. Hansi Flick’s side ran out dominant 4-0 winners in Wednesday night’s last-eight first-leg clash on home soil to continue their remarkable run of form, with Robert Lewandowski scoring twice against his former club after Raphinha had earlier poked in on the line to break the deadlock.
Lamine Yamal wrapped up a statement win 13 minutes from time to surely put the quarter-final tie beyond the reach of Dortmund ahead of next week’s return fixture at Signal Iduna Park. Substitute Maximilian Beier thought he had grabbed a late consolation for Niko Kovac’s men, only to see his effort chalked off for offside on a miserable night to forget for last season’s losing finalists.
Numerous records were broken or matched on a stunning evening for Barca, including Raphinha equalling the great Lionel Messi for the most Champions League goal involvements registered by a Blaugrana player during a single season set back during the 2011/12 campaign. Wednesday 9 April 2025 21:55 , George FloodFull-time
A total rout in this Champions League quarter-final first leg and Barcelona look to be sailing into the last four after some statement.
Blistering on the counter-attack, with Dortmund absolutely torn apart by that sublime front three.
Lewandowski at the double, Raphinha with a goal and two assists and Yamal just unplayable at times.
What a performance. Do we even need the second leg?

Barcelona 4-0 Borussia Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 21:5290 mins: Four minutes of stoppage time have been signalled.
Can Dortmund at least get a consolation goal to take back to Germany for what looks like being a dead-rubber second leg next week?
Not like that. How many times have they given the ball away tonight?!
Niko Kovac will be rightly seething.
Barcelona 4-0 Borussia Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 21:48 , George Flood88 mins: Two stunning blocks from Araujo deny Reyna and Brandt in quick succession.
Beier then fires home low for Dortmund, but the offside flag is up against Duranville.
Barcelona 4-0 Borussia Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 21:45 , George Flood84 mins: Has Yamal picked up a knock here?
He seemed to signal a few moments ago that he wanted to come off. That would certainly take the shine off an otherwise brilliant night.
Ansu Fati comes on in his place.
Barcelona 4-0 Borussia Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 21:44 , George Flood82 mins: Some sustained late pressure from Dortmund, with substitutes Reyna and Sule both going close.
But Barcelona won’t give up this clean sheet easily.
Barcelona 4-0 Borussia Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 21:4380 mins: There have been a flurry of changes from both sides in the last few minutes.
Sule and Duranville replace Ryerson and Gittens for Dortmund.
Barca send on Araujo, Eric Garcia and Ferran Torres for Martinez, Pedri and Lewandowski.
GOAL! Barcelona 4-0 Borussia Dortmund | Lamine Yamal 77'
Wednesday 9 April 2025 21:36 , George Flood77 mins: Barcelona are sailing into the Champions League semi-finals!
That irresistible front three combine beautifully on the counter-attack once again after Dortmund are caught in possession for the umpteenth time tonight.
Raphinha feeds Yamal, who beats Kobel with an emphatic little low toe-poke into the far corner.
What a statement of intent from the Blaugrana.
Barcelona 3-0 Borussia Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 21:35 , George FloodIncluding 11 in the Champions League!
Still an absolute scoring machine at almost 37.
Gavi on for Lopez for Barcelona. Lopez has been excellent tonight - a big call from Hansi Flick that more than paid off.

Barcelona 3-0 Borussia Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 21:32 , George Flood70 mins: Dortmund force a corner and it’s getting a bit heated inside the box with warnings all round from Norwegian referee Espen Eskas.
Barcelona 3-0 Borussia Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 21:3168 mins: Dortmund send on both Gio Reyna and Salih Ozcan after the third goal - too little, too late?
Chukwuemeka and Nmecha off.
GOAL! Barcelona 3-0 Borussia Dortmund | Robert Lewandowski 66'
Wednesday 9 April 2025 21:24 , George Flood66 mins: Barcelona do have their third of the night and it’s that man again!
That should be the tie over after a blistering counter-attack that follows Dortmund losing the ball at the other end.
Barca come pouring forward and Lopez ends up teeing up Lewandowski to blast home his second goal off the hand of a despairing Kobel.
Surely no way back for BVB.
Barcelona 2-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 21:2362 mins: How is it not 3-0?!
Lopez has three chances in just over a minute, dragging a low shot wide off the post before then having an effort blocked and firing over.
Dortmund are at complete sixes and sevens at the back with Yamal, Lewandowski and Raphinha all hunting further goals to make next week’s trip to Germany a mere formality.
Barcelona 2-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 21:1956 mins: Plenty of effort and endeavour still on display from Dortmund here, with some nice passes from Chukwuemeka in particular.
But they just haven’t got anything at all going in this one-sided second half so far.
Another Barcelona goal surely kills this quarter-final tie completely.

Wednesday 9 April 2025 21:1351 mins: Lewandowski is barged over by Anton after scoring Barcelona’s second of the night.
This could get ugly if Dortmund aren’t careful.
GOAL! Barcelona 2-0 Borussia Dortmund | Robert Lewandowski 48'
Wednesday 9 April 2025 21:06 , George Flood48 mins: Barcelona double their lead shortly after half-time!
Pedri seizes on some Dortmund sloppiness and a lovely ball to the back post from Yamal is headed across goal by Raphinha and then nodded in by a rising Lewandowski.
That’s his 28th goal in as many appearances against his former club but first in the Champions League.
Barcelona are now in complete control of this Champions League quarter-final. A mountain to climb for Dortmund in the tie.
Barcelona 1-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 21:04Back underway at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys.
One half-time change from Dortmund, with Adeyemi making way for Maximilian Beier.
Probably a wise move from Niko Kovac.
Barcelona 1-0 Dortmund

Barcelona 1-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:51 , George FloodHalf-time
Raphinha’s goal-line steal is the difference at the break in the first leg of this Champions League quarter-final.
But there have been plenty of chances at both ends and it’s been a very watchable tie thus far.
More of the same please after the interval.

Barcelona 1-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:48 , George Flood46 mins: Another chance for Guirassy, who shows lovely feet to deceive Cubarsi before slamming into the side netting after being teed up by Chelsea loanee Chukwuemeka.
That should do it for an entertaining first half in Catalonia.
Barcelona 1-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:47 , George Flood45 mins: Dortmund have had a fair few chances of their own now, Guirassy unable to connect with a delicious whipped cross from Adeyemi that evades Cubarsi.
One minute of added time signalled.
Barcelona 1-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:4643 mins: More danger for Dortmund before the break as Raphinha keeps the ball alive following a stray pass from Yamal and Lopez ends up working space for an insipid low shot from just outside the box that is no trouble for Kobel.
Barcelona 1-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:43 , George Flood39 mins: More Barcelona pressure and an inventive overhead kick from Lewandowski is easily gathered by Kobel.
Dortmund counter precisely again and a driven low effort from Gittens is deflected by Cubarsi before being held by Szczesny.
Barcelona 1-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:40 , George Flood35 mins: Hansi Flick is not a happy man on the touchline despite Barcelona’s lead.
We’ll need a reset after the ball hits the referee, who can’t get out of the way fast enough.
Dortmund beginning to have some joy through the midfield.
Barcelona 1-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:38 , George Flood33 mins: It’s end-to-end stuff all of a sudden now, Dortmund denied on the counter before Yamal surges forward and Raphinha slides wide.
Now a Guirassy mishit from close range denies the visitors an equaliser!
He normally buries those. Deary me.
Barcelona 1-0 Dortmund

Barcelona 1-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:3327 mins: Adeyemi is losing his head here, giving away a poor foul on Lopez having already conceded that free-kick from which the opening goal was scored by inexplicably pulling Kounde’s hair.
Kovac will have to hook him early if this continues. Really costly.
GOAL! Barcelona 1-0 Dortmund | Raphinha 25'
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:27 , George Flood25 mins: And it leads to the first goal of the night!
Pau Cubarsi flicks goalwards after a sweeping free-kick to the back post is expertly knocked down by centre-back partner Inigo Martinez.
He thinks he’s got his first Champions League goal, but for some reason Raphinha runs in to nick it and poke home on the line.
That’s going to be very tight for offside - why did he touch it?!
The goal STANDS after a long VAR check. Raphinha breathes a sigh of relief.
Barcelona 0-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:26 , George Flood23 mins: Adeyemi flicks the ball over the head of Kounde and then blatantly pulls his hair as the Barcelona defender prevents him from regathering possession.
Mindless stuff and it gives Barca a free-kick in a really dangerous position.
Barcelona 0-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:25 , George Flood21 mins: Some lovely flowing football from Barcelona at times here, with the gifted Yamal frequently at the centre of it.
But Dortmund will be pleased to have rode out that early storm without conceding.
They need to get hold of some possession, though.
They continue to give it away cheaply and nothing is sticking with Guirassy up top.
Barcelona 0-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:23 , George FloodAs if anyone didn’t already know, Lamine Yamal really is some talent.
And still only 17! Absurd.
Stop that Lamine Yamal 🤧

Barcelona 0-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:21 , George Flood18 mins: Raphinha with a curious approach from a corner there as he comes from off the pitch to try and collect a short ball. That was never going to be permitted.
Another bout of strong Barca pressure comes to nothing, but the corners are piling up.
Barcelona 0-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:19 , George Flood15 mins: Barcelona force another corner and Raphinha’s hopeful volley from long range is blocked.
An iffy refereeing decision then halts a promising Dortmund counter in its tracks.
Barcelona 0-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:17 , George Flood13 mins: Dominant Barcelona probe patiently for another early opening before at the other end Guirassy almost connects with a wicked Dortmund delivery from the right flank.
The offside flag is up, however.
Barcelona 0-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:14 , George Flood9 mins: Some brief respite for Dortmund as they counter-attack well and earn their first corner, which is guided harmlessly wide.
Barcelona are quickly back monopolising possession...
Barcelona 0-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:10 , George Flood7 mins: Dortmund are absolutely under siege already in Catalonia.
Raphinha sprints down into that left channel before laying off for Lewandowski, whose first-time effort is tipped over by Kobel.
Barcelona could be 3-0 up already here...
Barcelona 0-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:08 , George Flood5 mins: Barcelona look in the mood early on here as Kobel parries an effort from the surging Yamal, who then gets a slice of good fortune as he skillfully cuts in from the byline and tries to curl home from a tough angle instead of laying off for a miffed Lewandowski in the six-yard box.
Barcelona 0-0 Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 20:06 , George Flood2 mins: Barca in the ascendancy early on, as you might expect, following an initial challenge on Yamal.
Raphinha gets to the byline and looks to cut back for Lopez in the middle, but Bensebaini clears behind for the first corner of the night.

Time for that famous Champions League anthem...
Borussia Dortmund awaiting first win over Barcelona
Wednesday 9 April 2025 19:43 , George FloodIt’s certainly worth noting ahead of tonight’s game that Borussia Dortmund have never previously beaten Barcelona in three attempts in the Champions League, losing that league phase thriller 3-2 on home soil back in December.
They also faced Barca twice during the group stage of the 2019/20 competition, drawing 0-0 in Germany and losing 3-1 away at the Camp Nou.
Can they turn that around tonight and secure a valuable shock lead to take back to Signal Iduna Park for next Tuesday’s all-important second leg?
Though they still have a faint chance of finishing in the top four in the Bundesliga, Dortmund are in all likelihood going to have to win the Champions League this season to qualify for next year’s edition.

Final preparations

Kovac: Underdogs Dortmund must be disciplined to reach semis
Wednesday 9 April 2025 19:26 , George FloodNiko Kovac acknowledges that his Dortmund side are underdogs against a Barcelona team who have yet to lose a single match in any competition in 2025.
He has called for his team to be disciplined defensively in the face of Barca’s impressive firepower and insists there are weaknesses to exploit.
He also doesn’t believe that opposite number Hansi Flick will be taking his eye off the ball and dreaming of the potential trophies to come down the line this season.
"We come here as outsiders, as underdogs, but it does not make it easier for our opponent," Kovac said at his pre-match press conference yesterday.
"We are on the rise so I see us as underdogs but there are two matches and they still need to come to Dortmund. I think we have chances to reach the semi-finals.

"We know the attacking power we will come up against. We have to be disciplined. They are extremely strong in and around the box.
“They have a lot of strengths but every opponent has weaknesses and we want to use them.
"It would not be wise to say what we have planned but we have an idea.
"I cannot imagine that Hansi is talking about dreaming to win the treble. I know him. He is from (the southwestern German region of) Swabia.
“He is down-to-earth and focuses on work. We will not talk about if Barcelona can win three titles.
"We came here to win the game and if it is a good result we are happy to leave with it."
Guirassy, Gittens and Nmecha all return for Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 19:11Borussia Dortmund boss Niko Kovac makes three changes to the team that demolished Freiburg 4-1 in the Bundesliga last weekend.
Top scorer Serhou Guirassy returns in attack as expected, along with in-demand England Under-21 star Jamie Gittens.
Maximilian Beier and Daniel Svensson drop out, with Felix Nmecha also starting with former Brighton stalwart Pascal Gross suspended.
Chelsea loanee Carney Chukwuemeka has a key role to play in midfield.
Niklas Sule and Yan Couto are both on the bench after injury and suspension respectively.

Fermin Lopez preferred to Gavi in Barcelona midfield
Wednesday 9 April 2025 19:05 , George FloodThe fit-again Inigo Martinez returns in defence for Barcelona tonight after missing Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Real Betis in LaLiga with a minor gluteal injury, replacing Ronald Araujo as he resumes his familiar centre-back partnership with Pau Cubarsi.
And as expected, Raphinha rejoins the attack after starting on the bench at the weekend for a breather ahead of this game, joining ex-Dortmund star Robert Lewandowski.
Ferran Torres - who scored twice as a substitute to beat BVB in the league phase back in December - drops to the bench, but Fermin Lopez gets the nod ahead of Gavi in midfield in a big call from Hansi Flick.

Borussia Dortmund lineup
Wednesday 9 April 2025 18:59 , George FloodBorussia Dortmund XI: Kobel, Ryerson, Can, Anton, Bensebaini, Nmecha, Chukwuemeka, Adeyemi, Brandt, Gittens, Guirassy
Subs: Meyer, Lotka, Couto, Sule, Svensson, Kabar, Ozcan, Watjen, Reyna, Duranville, Beier
Barcelona lineup
Wednesday 9 April 2025 18:53Barcelona XI: Szczesny, Kounde, Cubarsi, Martinez, Balde, De Jong, Pedri, Yamal, Lopez, Raphinha, Lewandowski
Subs: Araujo, Gavi, Ferran, Fati, Pena, Torre, Christensen, Victor, Eric, Kochen, Fort, Martin
Stage is set in Barcelona
Wednesday 9 April 2025 18:38The stage is set at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, Barcelona’s almost 100-year-old 55,926-capacity Olympic Stadium that has been their home - having previously hosted Espanyol - since substantial renovation work on the famous Camp Nou began back in May 2023.
Those works have been going on for almost two years now, with the Camp Nou’s attendance set to increase to 105,000 as they look to fully modernise one of world football’s most iconic old grounds.
It remains to be seen exactly when Barca will be able to move back, but it should be later this year at some point after delays.

Lewandowski eyes first Champions League goal against Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 18:28Barcelona frontman Robert Lewandowski going up against one of his former clubs is another fascinating storyline tonight.
After scoring 103 goals in 187 appearances for Dortmund, winning two Bundesliga titles and firing them to the Champions League final ahead of leaving for Bayern on a free transfer in 2014, he has gone on to net against them more times than any other side in his illustrious career.
Lewandowski has notched 27 times in 27 total games against BVB, but curiously never in the Champions League.

Hansi Flick boasts 100 per cent record against Dortmund
Wednesday 9 April 2025 18:17There are plenty of intriguing subplots for tonight’s match in Catalonia, not least Hansi Flick once again going up against the side he dominated during his two years in charge at Bayern (who host Dortmund in the latest edition of Der Klassiker on Saturday).
Not only has Flick never lost to BVB in six previous matches as a manager, he boasts a 100 per cent record against them across all competitions.
Will that continue tonight in this quarter-final first-leg showdown?

Barcelona 'keeping feet on the ground' amid quadruple bid
Wednesday 9 April 2025 18:08 , George FloodThough being held to a 1-1 home draw by Real Betis at the weekend was a minor blip, Barcelona still wound up extending their LaLiga title lead to four points with eight matches to go after Real Madrid were stunned by Valencia at the Bernabeu.
The Blaugrana had days earlier booked their spot in an all-Clasico Copa del Rey final against Madrid later this month after overcoming Atletico in a tense second leg, while they already won the Spanish Super Cup against their fiercest rivals in Saudi Arabia in January.
Dominant Barca remain on for a potential trophy quadruple during a remarkable first season under the tutelage of former Bayern Munich and Germany boss Hansi Flick, whose side have now gone 22 matches unbeaten across all competitions since December and had won seven in a row before the draw with Betis.
Despite all that, the head coach insists he is not getting carried away by his team’s success.
"We can dream, but players and coaches must keep our feet on the ground," Flick said at his pre-match press conference yesterday.
"We have to look at what we have achieved, based on hard work, and it must not be the end. We have to pull out all the stops to keep going.
"We want to continue without losing this year, but we have to perform at our best against a very strong rival."

Barcelona vs Dortmund prediction
Wednesday 9 April 2025 17:54It’s hard to look past Barcelona in any fixture given the form they’re in at the moment.
Saturday’s draw with Real Betis, while a mini-setback, did see them open up a four-point lead at the top of the LaLiga table and Hansi Flick was able to rest a few key names with this game in mind.
Dortmund have been a mixed bag all season and while they have all the tools to give Barca a scare, quality will eventually prove decisive in this first-leg showdown.
Barcelona to win, 3-1.

Borussia Dortmund team news
Wednesday 9 April 2025 17:48 , George FloodDortmund were rocked this week by the news that versatile Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck is facing six months on the sidelines after suffering a meniscus tear in his left knee during training.
Midfielder Marcel Sabitzer is also still out with a knee injury, while Pascal Gross is suspended.
Yan Couto is back from a ban, while Niklas Sule should be fit after a knock.
Top scorer Serhou Guirassy will come back into the attack after coming off the bench to score in a 4-1 rout of Freiburg away in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Barcelona team news
Wednesday 9 April 2025 17:42 , George FloodBarcelona have veteran defender Inigo Martinez back fit this evening following a minor gluteal injury that forced him to miss Saturday night’s 1-1 LaLiga draw at home to Real Betis.
He should return to Hansi Flick’s starting lineup along with Raphinha, who started on the bench at the weekend before coming on in the second half.
Marc Bernal, Marc Casado and Dani Olmo are all still out injured, while Marc-Andre ter Stegen continues to work his way back to full fitness after a long-term knee problem.
