Barcelona to 'step up interest' in out of contract Liverpool midfielder

Barcelona are set to step up their interest in Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita, according to reports.

The Guinea international is into the last six months of his Anfield contract and with no sign of a new deal on the table, it would appear that his five-year tenure on Merseyside will be shortly coming to an end.

The 28-year-old is now free to talk to other clubs and he considers the next move in his career and a switch to LaLiga could be a serious proposition.

According to Mundo Deportivo, league-leaders Barca are finalising their summer transfer options and with Keita set to be available on a free transfer, the Liverpool star could be on their final list.

Catalan boss Xavi is in the market for a new midfielder, with Franck Kessie expected to depart along with Nou Camp veteran Sergio Busquets.

Liverpool are anticipated to undertake a midfield overhaul of their own and with big-name stars like Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice continually linked with the club, Keita knows that his time at Anfield is up.

Jurgen Klopp signed Keita from RB Leipzig in 2017 and loaned him back to the German club for a year before he started his Liverpool adventure in 2018. But the number eight has often been plagued with injuries throughout his time on Merseyside and has never reached the heights he was expected to despite the club's silverware success.

Now it looks as though Barcelona could be prepared to give Keita a new lease of life in different league while still maintaining his involvement in Champions League football.
