Barcelona set deadline for Frenkie de Jong to Chelsea or Man Utd transfer amid La Liga worry

Barcelona are aiming to sell Frenkie de Jong by next week at the latest as La Liga worries mount up in regards the inability to register new signings, with Chelsea and Manchester United both hoping to sign the midfielder.

The 2022/23 summer transfer window may well be remembered as the Barcelona transfer window. Not only have the La Liga giants been in dire financial straits, but this has correlated in an unexpected way to them being one of the busiest sides across Europe in the market.

Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen, Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski and most recently Jules Kounde have all joined Xavi's big rebuild. But will they actually be able to be part of it on the pitch? The Mirror reported that La Liga have rejected Barca's most recent request to register their five new additions - plus Ousmane Dembele after his contract run out prior to agreeing a new deal - prompting more cause for panic on the outgoings side of things.

it is believed that the solution in their minds is to sell Frenkie de Jong, as well as the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Memphis Depay. Those three outgoings should generate enough money to comply with La Liga regulations. In fact, the Spanish press are very dismissive on the situation, believing that all will be fine very soon.

Spanish Journalist Gerard Romero has claimed that a De Jong sale next week is the target of the club and is in fact likely at this stage. He, alongside The Times' Paul Hirst, have name-checked Chelsea as the most likely next destination for the Dutchman, despite Manchester United already having a deal agreed with Barcelona. The ongoing negotiations between the two sides for Marcos Alonso means that the process can be sped up significantly with both Todd Boehly and Joan Laporta in communication with each other.

Although Romero did reiterate with the situation surrounding the midfielder that this is a feeling of his and therefore 'nothing is still 100%' done as of today. Can Chelsea really get a deal for the 25-year-old done next week?

With Wesley Fofana negotiations the main focus of Boehly currently, it's difficult to envisage a situation whereby both the Leicester defender and Barca midfielder are 'done deals' by the end of next week but who knows, anything in football can happen.

Encouragingly though, the fact that Chelsea are being name-checked a lot more frequently than Man United now indicates that this 'hijack' is definitely possible.

Chelsea fans- Can you see a situation where Wesley Fofana and Frenkie de Jong transfers are 'done deals' by the end of next week or is that too unrealistic? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below!
