Barcelona’s £426m warning amid Man United’s Frenkie De Jong interest as Mike Phelan talks held

Here are your Manchester United morning headlines for Saturday, June 11.

Barcelona issue £426m warning as Manchester United eye Frenkie de Jong transfer

Senior Barcelona official Eduard Romeu has extraordinarily claimed that £426m (€500m) is needed to “save” the club, meaning a host of players could be leaving including Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News last month, United are interested in signing the Barcelona midfielder and are weighing up a big-money offer. United are desperate to strengthen their midfield options this summer and De Jong is a leading target for manager Erik ten Hag.

Barcelona have debts of around €1bn (£850m), according to the Athletic, and as a result have been hit hard by La Liga’s financial rules. Spain’s salary cap rules this season meant Barcelona were forced to let Lionel Messi leave for Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer last summer.

Manchester United to negotiate Mike Phelan departure after Erik ten Hag decision

Manchester United will negotiate Mike Phelan's departure as assistant coach after he was told that he would have no part to play in the first-team set-up under Erik ten Hag.

The 59-year-old returned to the club under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a first-team coach before being promoted to the role of assistant manager three years ago. The former Hull City manager cut a detached figure in the dugout following Solskjaer's sacking, but Rangnick leant on him more as the season progressed. Ten Hag has appointed Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren as his assistants for next season, but the club will need to negotiate Phelan's exit given he still has one year remaining on his current deal.
