Barcelona reveal transfer aim as Frenkie de Jong plan outlined amid Manchester United interest

Xavi has revealed he hopes to add two more midfielders to his Barcelona squad this summer and believes the Catalan club have found the 'ideal position' for Frenkie de Jong.

United agreed an €85million fee with Barca for De Jong last summer. However, the midfielder's wage deferral stalled the deal and he eventually stayed at Camp Nou.

Although De Jong publicly pledged his commitment to Barcelona last year, he privately informed Erik ten Hag he would be prepared to join United. The United boss remains an admirer of his countryman, despite not being able to get a deal over the line last summer.

However, though it has not been ruled out that United could make a return for De Jong this summer, with the Old Trafford club having agreed personal terms with Mason Mount and negotiating with Chelsea over a transfer fee, it seems unlikely another bid will be made.

La Liga champions Barcelona have waved goodbye to long-serving midfielder Sergio Busquets this summer and are on the hunt for midfield reinforcements. Xavi believes he requires two new players in that area of the squad this summer.

On De Jong, Xavi described him as a 'chaotic player' with 'impressive virtues' as he spoke of the midfielder's development and where he needs to improve. The Barca boss believes that, having found the best position for the Netherlands international, the 26-year-old needs to add the final pass to his game.

Speaking to Spanish broadcaster Movistar Plus, Xavi said: “I need two signings in midfield. I lack an interior and with Busquets’ departure, we also need a pivot. This has to be the priority.

"He’s (De Jong) our most chaotic player within the order. He has some impressive virtues. He’s a huge player. We have found the ideal position for him. He only needs the final pass, to dare more.”
