Barcelona respond after legal warning as Ousmane Dembele releases statement

Barcelona have responded after the club were hit with a legal warning following their decision to tell Ousmane Dembele that he must leave the Camp Nou.

After claiming that Dembele had turned down their contract ultimatum, sporting director Alemany stated that the Frenchman "must leave the club as soon as possible."

It drew the wrath of the Spanish PFA, who believe that such a claim is against the player's contract and being forced to leave is in breach of his "labour rights."

Dembele, whose current deal expires in June, then retorted by saying he had not yet decided whether or not he was leaving the club and now Barca have spoken out in an official capacity once again.

A stern Alemany told club media : "We started negotiating with Ousmane's agents some six months ago.

"We have been in constant contact with them since regarding the club's position, stating that the club wants the player to remain.

"He has been offered different deals, we have been on top of the situation. I believe it's been long enough for the player to decide where his future lies.

"There are 11 days left in the January transfer window for registering players, our understanding is after this length process, the player has decided he wants to leave and clearly we have informed him that we want players who are committed to Barca and Barca's future.

"He should probably leave as soon as possible both for his own good at Barca's good. He has been informed as such and based on that, the coach's technical decision is in line with the club's position and how things have progressed."

Manager Xavi Hernandez has left the 24-year-old out of the squad for Thursday's Copa del Rey clash with Athletic Bilbao, and Alemany sees no controversy in the hotly-debated call.

"The fact he is not in the squad is simply a question of logic," he continued. "A technical standpoint derived from a negotiation that has clearly culminated in the player not wanting to remain."

Dembele, however, claims he could still be at the Camp Nou come next season and affirmed in a statement: "Don't think I'm out of the project.

"Don't speak of intentions I never had. I've a contract and I’m available for Xavi. I'm not gonna give up.

"There are contract talks ongoing. My agent is on it - I'm only focusing on the pitch."

Xavi himself has had his say, echoing Alemany's sentiment.

"I don't want to disrespect anyone," the Spaniard said during a pre-match press conference on Wednesday.

"The message is clear: he either renews or he looks to leave [the club].

"It is not an easy or pleasant situation, but the interests of the club are paramount.

"We are in a complex, difficult situation. If he does not renew, the club must find a solution. We can't be in this situation. We have waited a long time. Mateu has been in talks [with Dembele's agent] for five months and we can't wait any longer.

"He tells me he wants to stay. Ask him [why he hasn't renewed yet]."
