Manchester United are reportedly lagging behind in the race to sign AC Milan Franck Kessie, with Barcelona said to be leading the chase.
Kessie is out of contract at the San Siro this summer, and has been linked to a number of clubs throughout Europe, including United.
The Reds are set to make midfield a priority during the summer transfer window, having struggled in that department this season.
And Kessie is just one of the names that has been touted as a potential addition – although United could have work to do if they want to secure the Ivory Coast international’s services.
According to Marca, Barcelona have been following the midfielder’s progress ‘for a long time’ and have now put themselves in ‘pole position’ to sign him this summer.
The report though also adds that Borussia Dortmund superstar Erling Haaland remains the Catalan giants’ number one target this summer, which may have an impact on their efforts.
Kessie was reported to have agreed a deal to join Tottenham in January, although a move never materialised.
Elsewhere, Paul Pogba will reportedly have to take a pay cut this summer in order to secure a move away from United.
The midfielder looks increasingly likely to be on his way out of Old Trafford for a second time, with his contract set to expire in the summer.

The French World Cup winner has made his return to Ralf Rangnick’s side recently following injury, but no progress has been made in signing him up to a new deal.
Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have both been linked with a move for the 28-year-old, although Italian publication IlBianconero have suggested Pogba is desperate to return to Juventus, having left the Serie A giants for a second stint at Old Trafford.
The report claims Pogba will have to take a pay cut in order to fit into Juve’s new wage structure though, with his current salary not viable for the Turin club.
