After guiding his team to an emphatic 5-2 victory over Real Madrid in the Supercopa de Espana, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has asked president Joan Laporta to keep Ronald Araujo at the club. The German tactician believes Araujo’s departure in January would take a significant toll on the Blaugrana.
One of the most sought-after defenders in Europe, Araujo, is reportedly interested in a change of scenery in the January transfer window. The talented centre-back has opened the doors to his exit after Barca refused to meet his contract demands.
The Uruguayan missed the first 16 La Liga matches of the season with a hamstring injury, while he warmed the bench in the last two. Araujo made his competitive debut under Flick in the Round-of-32 clash with Barbastro last week. He provided an assist as Barca marched on to a 4-0 win.
Araujo also impressed on Sunday, 12th January, as Barcelona beat Real Madrid in the Supercopa de Espana final. Coming off the bench for the injured Inigo Martinez in the 28th minute, Araujo delivered a brilliant performance as Barca secured a comfortable 5-2 victory.
Barcelona Coach Hansi Flick Demands Ronald Araujo’s Renewal After Supercopa Win
According to Fichajes.net, Flick liked what he saw from Araujo on Sunday, and made a bold request to Barcelona president Laporta after the game. The former Bayern Munich manager wants Barca to prioritize Araujo’s renewal, as losing him would take a significant toll on the Blaugrana’s defence. Additionally, with Martinez out for a month, Barca could use Araujo’s talents at the heart of the defence.
Keeping Araujo, however, would not be straightforward, as Juventus are pushing hard to sign the defender. The Old Lady are reportedly preparing an offer that would please both Barca and Araujo. Now, the cash-strapped Barcelona must decide whether they want to accept the offer or push harder to keep Araujo at the club.
Sporting director Deco is handling the negotiations with Araujo. The club wants to keep him and the Portuguese will try to find a solution when he holds meetings with Araujo’s agents as well as the player himself.
Araujo has played 152 games for the club in all competitions so far, scoring eight goals and providing six assists. His contract with the Catalans expires in June 2026.
