Barcelona Eyeing Move For 24-Year-Old Ligue 1 Centre-Forward

La Liga giants Barcelona are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Lille centre-forward Jonathan David.

Canadian international David has been a revelation since joining Lille from KAA Gent in the summer of 2020. The 24-year-old initially struggled to trouble Ligue 1 defenders. But thanks to his impressive adaptability, he turned things around quite quickly.

He played his best game in the 2022-23 season, scoring 24 goals and providing four assists in 37 Ligue 1 matches, emerging as one of the most prolific players in the division. The 2023-24 season also turned out to be excellent, as he recorded 26 goals and nine assists in 47 games across competitions.

David has picked up right where he left off last season. Playing 26 games for the club in all competitions, he has scored 17 goals and provided five assists.

Barcelona Are Interested in Signing Jonathan David

Between his stellar showings and his contract expiring in June, several European clubs have recorded their interest in the striker. According to Fichajes.net, Barcelona are currently leading the race to secure his services. With the Blaugrana’s finances still wobbly, they are desperate not to miss out on the opportunity to sign a player of David’s calibre for free.

With Robert Lewandowski turning 37 in August, Barcelona cannot afford to count only on the Polish international for one more season. And the Catalans believe David is the right man to rejuvenate their attack. His movement, excellent conversion rate, ability to read the game, and passing range have made him an attractive option to Barcelona. With David, Hansi Flick will have the option to be a little more flexible with his game plan.

As per Fichajes.net, Barcelona have long been negotiating with David’s entourage and talks are progressing well. The negotiations are reportedly very advanced, and it seems like only a matter of time before the deal is sealed.

However, as long as David is wearing Lille’s colours, he is unlikely to discuss his transfer to Barcelona. He has immense respect for the French side and is determined to leave on a good note.

David has played 209 games for the club in all competitions so far, scoring 101 times and providing 23 assists. He won the Ligue 1 title with Lille in 2020-21.
