LaLiga president Javier Tebas has stated that Barcelona is on the verge of being able to afford the signing of Athletic Club winger Nico Williams. Williams, aged 22, has a release clause of €58 million ($63.2m) in his contract. Barça president Joan Laporta recently mentioned that the Catalan club could financially manage to acquire the Spain international.
Barcelona is currently exceeding their LaLiga-imposed annual spending limit, which is hindering them from registering new signings. However, Tebas has indicated that their financial situation is showing signs of improvement. Tebas mentioned to Diario Sport that if Barcelona adheres to a 1:1 spending limit, they will have the capability to secure a deal for Williams.
Tebas highlighted Barcelona's efforts to reduce their wage bill by over €200 million ($218m) and other internal measures within the club that are unrelated to their financial levers. He expressed confidence that bringing in a player like Nico Williams is feasible under these circumstances.
Barça's reported interest in signing a midfielder and a left winger this summer has made Williams a priority for the latter role. The Athletic winger has been a standout performer at Euro 2024, aiding Spain in reaching the final against England on Sunday.
Williams has been bombarded with questions about his future during the tournament, causing frustration for his current club, Athletic. The club's president, Jon Uriarte, mentioned that Williams has not been adequately protected by the Spanish Federation. Uriarte also asserted that Athletic is capable of meeting Williams' ambitions both in terms of sporting success and financially.
Despite the speculation surrounding his future, Williams has remained focused on Euro 2024, emphasizing that his primary concern is the upcoming final in Berlin.
