Barbour Mallow Chelsea wellington boots review: “finally, wellies I actually want to wear!”

A blonde haired woman walks through grass wearing Barbour Mallow welly boots.

Wellies are an essential footwear choice for navigating the UK's unpredictable weather. But with so many options available, finding the perfect pair that combines practicality, durability and style can be a challenge.

As a dedicated dog owner, my best wellies aren't just for occasional rainy days either - they're practically glued to my feet! Morning dog walks, muddy park adventures, impromptu trips to the beach (yes, even in winter) - you name it, my wellies are there.

Previously, I opted for the knee-high style, specifically Hunters - and yes, I probably was swayed by Kate Moss in her Glastonbury get-up. However, about ten years ago, I decided to go shorter and over the years, I’ve tried out various brands, but I can say I’m now a convert to the Barbour Mallow Chelsea wellington boots.

With their heritage as a country brand, Barbour knows a thing or two about creating practical and durable footwear for the great outdoors. And as a fashion brand, they understand the importance of style and design as can be attested to by the stylish celebs seen in their wellies and best Barbour jackets, ranging from Sienna Miller to the Princess of Wales. Their chunky style Mallow boots are the latest ones that I’ve tried and tested.

Barbour Mallow Chelsea wellington boots: Comfort and fit

A modern take on the classic Chelsea boot, the Mallow combines sleek style with serious weather protection. Crafted from rubber with elasticated side gussets, these boots are incredibly easy to slip on and off – a godsend for anyone with a high instep like me who usually struggles with wellies.

But what about protection? Despite their shorter length, these boots stand up admirably to the elements. The chunky sole provides excellent grip on both hard ground and slippery mud, while the lightweight rubber construction means you won't feel weighed down, even when tackling steep hills.

For extra comfort in colder weather, there's space for either an insole or chunky welly socks, ensuring your feet stay cosy without compromising the easy-on, easy-off design. I've found these ankle boots surprisingly weather-ready - paired with good socks, they keep my feet warm and dry in most conditions. While they won't handle ankle-deep puddles, they've protected me through everything else British weather throws my way, from muddy dog walks to snowy school runs and wet weekend errands.

The shorter style makes these boots practical to store as well. Most of the year, they sit neatly on my outdoor boot rack, but in the less muddy months they slip easily onto the indoor shoe rack in my hallway - something that's near impossible with tall wellies.

Barbour Mallow Chelsea wellington boots: Style

As someone who values both practicality and style, I've found these Chelsea boot wellies to be the perfect fit for my semi-rural lifestyle. Whether I'm navigating muddy fields with my dog, running errands in the village or working at my local (dog-friendly) café, these boots effortlessly adapt to any setting.

The chunky sole and minimalist design add a touch of modern sophistication, while the shorter length ensures a comfortable and flattering fit with all my favourite outfits, from skirts and leggings to my trusty jeans. With knee high pairs, wearing jeans can be uncomfortable, not to mention downright unstylish, but I’ve teamed the Barbour Mallow welly with everything from wide leg styles to the popular barrel leg jeans.

The two-tone style of these wellies takes them up a notch. I have the black pair with a white sole, which is super versatile and goes with everything, but there are some other lovely colour combinations – some of which I already have my eye on. How many welly boots is too many?!

Barbour Mallow Chelsea wellington boots: Care and cleaning

These boots are refreshingly low maintenance. A quick wipe with a damp sponge keeps them looking smart and that's really all they need most of the time.

However, here's a crucial tip from someone who learned the hard way: never dry your wellies near direct heat or sunlight. I made this mistake with another pair of Barbour boots and discovered their vulnerability when my toes got unexpectedly wet – the heat had caused the rubber to split. Instead, let them dry naturally in a well-ventilated space.

Barbour Mallow Chelsea wellington boots: Verdict

At £55, these boots offer countryside chic with a price tag that won't sting too much. The Mallow's greatest strength is its versatile design - it looks more like a fashionable Chelsea boot than a traditional welly, making it perfect for everyday wear.

Don't let the stylish appearance fool you though - these boots are built to last, handling muddy dog walks and rough terrain with ease, all while remaining surprisingly lightweight. And here's a money-saving tip: if you're not fussed about having the newest colours, keep an eye out for sales on Barbour's short wellies - you might just snap up an even better deal.
