Football fans attending matches at St James' Park are not allowed to drink alcohol while sat in their stadium seats.
But for rugby, the rules are different.
It is not illegal to for rugby spectators to consume alcohol within view of the pitch, whereas at football matches in England it is a criminal offence for a spectator to drink alcohol at their seat, due to a law introduced in 1985 which specifically applies to football matches.
Rightly or wrongly, that's the state of play.
Which means the thousands of rugby fans will be able to buy alcohol at St James' this weekend, and drink it while watching the Challenge Cup and Heineken Cup finals.
