Bar gets rid of flushing toilets and asks customers to throw sawdust down instead

A trendy bar has done away with flushing toilets in an effort to help save the environment - and now asks customers to throw sawdust down on top of their business.

Frank's Cafe opened in 2009 on the top floor of the Peckham Levels, a south-east London creative hub for independent businesses that operates out of a disused car park.

And after deciding more needed to be done to tackle unnecessary water wastage, the venue has opted to ask punters to be more "environmentally sustainable" by installing eco toilets that were supplied by ComPOOst Solutions.

The toilets consist of a wooden shelf with a seat fixed to it, and beside the seat is a metal bucket filled with sawdust and a metal cup, which you use to scoop the woodchips up and throw them down when you are finished.

A spokesperson for ComPOOst Solutions said: “As an organic farm we understand how important it is to cut down on the number of chemicals used for waste treatment.

“By omitting the use of any chemicals, ComPOOst Solutions allows the waste to breakdown naturally. The nutrients can then be returned to the soil as a renewable fertiliser.

“With the airflow created by our design and the process of the urine being filtered off into sealed units, little to no smell is created.”

ComPOOst Solutions claim that the sawdust eliminates any odours from the deposits, and they also celebrate that there is no "chemical smell" used to mask the smells.

The portable toilet company, based on a farm in Somerset, then use the end product they collect from the toilets as fertiliser.

And the staff at Frank's Cafe - which looks out over London and is only open during selective summer months - have pledged to check the unique loos every half an hour to make sure they are in good condition.

A sign on the bar toilets reads: “No water supply or water tankers are needed. No risk for overflow. The user adds sawdust after visit, which works to eliminate odours.

“Safe for the environment, no chemical handling hazards, safe for sewerage treatment works, no 'chemical' smell trying to mask the sewage odours.

“As well as the water, chemical and GHG reductions, the end product, compost, is a valuable resource and additionally prevents the use of chemical fertilisers.”
