Bank holiday travel chaos as e-gates stop working at all UK airports

Holidaymakers are facing travel chaos this bank holiday as e-gates have failed at airports across the country.

The Home Office, which is responsible for border control, said it is working to fix a technical problem that caused electronic border gates at airports around the UK to stop working late on Friday.

Manchester Airport warned the issue may lead to longer waiting times for passengers at what is the start of a busy bank holiday weekend. The airport tweeted in the early hours of Saturday: "UK Border Force is currently experiencing an outage affecting its e-gates.

"There are currently no significant queues, but this may result in longer waiting times. Our team is working with UKBF to support their operations and minimise disruption. We appreciate your understanding."

They added: "UK Border Force is currently experiencing an issue impacting all of its e-gates. This may result in longer waiting times for passengers. Our team is working with UKBF to support their operations and minimise disruption. We appreciate your understanding."

A Home Office spokesperson said: "We are aware of a nationwide border system issue affecting arrivals into the UK. We are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible and are liaising with port operators and airlines to minimise disruption for travellers."
