Bangor striker Michael Halliday opens up on retirement vision after Steel success

Veteran striker Michael Halliday admits he could finally retire on a high if Bangor get promoted this season.

The 43-year-old celebrated his third Steel and Sons Cup success after Saturday's 2-1 win over Dunmurry Rec at Seaview.

Halliday accepts he doesn't know what the future holds, but he says if Bangor can go on to win the Premier Intermediate League title this season he could be tempted to dance into the sunset.

"I am 43 now, plus VAT," Halliday joked after Saturday's Steel success in North Belfast.

"If the club reach the goals they want and go up a division, I could maybe go out on a high - the Steel and Sons and a league title. Maybe that could be me.

"But I have been saying that for about five years now.

"Bangor want to be back in the Premier League, and hopefully one day we will get there."

Second half goals from Ben Arthurs and Adam Neale saw Bangor come from behind to beat Dunmurry Rec.

It is the club's fourth Steel and Sons Cup win, and a first for manager Lee Feeney.

Halliday previously won it with Glentoran II's and Dundela, and insists this latest success means as much to him as any other trophy he has lifted in his career.

"It is a great feeling to win any trophy. And I have come to the realisation that this could be my last cup final, so it is a good feeling to win it," he said.

"We had to do it the hard way, coming from behind. Dunmurry weren't in a rush to get on with things, even from an early stage.

"So the longer it stayed 0-0, the more confidence they would get. And then the longer it stayed 1-0, the more we might start to doubt ourselves.

"But we got our goals at the right time, and once we went ahead we knew we could see things out.

"It means a lot to the club. The Steel and Sons and the Intermediate Cup are the two most prestigious cups in our league.

"Unfortunately we are out of the Intermediate, so we wanted to win this. Hopefully the celebrations will be good."

He added: "This means as much as any other cup I have won. At the start of the season you set out goals of what you want to do.

"For us it was to win the Steel and Sons Cup, and also get promoted. So we have achieved the first part, and now we have to try and push on in the league."
