Paul Dickson says Bangor have double vision as they look to finish the season with silverware.
The Seasiders booked their place in the fourth round of the Intermediate Cup on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Comber Rec.
Lee Feeney’s men are into the last-16 of the competition, while they remain firmly in the hunt for the Premier Intermediate League title.
Bangor currently sit second in the table, just one point behind leaders Armagh City and with two games in hand.
It promises to be a rousing climax to the season for the Clandeboye Park outfit, and defender Dickson is determined to finish it on a high.
“The Intermediate Cup is a big target for us. That’s the only cup competition we have left, alongside the league,” the 38-year-old told Match on Tuesday.
“So we would love to go all the way if we can. The final is at Windsor which is an extra incentive for teams.
“We got to the semis of the Steel and Sons, and to lose out at that stage was bitterly disappointing.
“So we would love to go all the way in both the league and Intermediate Cup.
“From now until the end of the season we want to try and win every game we play, but we will just take it one game at a time.”
Bangor have lost just twice in the PIL, both losses coming in December as the club’s relentless pursuit at the top of the table was temporarily derailed.
Dickson believes the defeats are evidence of an ultra-competitive league this season, and expects more twists and turns as the weeks unfold.
“The league is heating up. It has been a bit stop-start due to cup games, so it is hard to tell who is going well because teams have games in hand,” he added.
“We have lost just twice in the league and both defeats came in September, but it isn’t anything we are panicking about.
“We lost to Armagh, but we lost two of our goalkeepers and Michael Halliday ended up having to go in nets. So that didn’t help.
“Banbridge beat us at home which was disappointing, we just couldn’t break them down on the day.
“But we have always bounced back from a defeat by winning our next game. That was important.
“There are some massive games coming up for every club and it will be exciting.
“We have a couple of league games coming up and we want to kick on. We have been doing pretty well and we just want to keep it going.”
Dickson was named man of the match after Saturday’s win over Comber.
Ben Arthurs got the winning goal as Bangor saw off their Amateur League opponents to reach the last-16 of the Intermediate Cup.
“It was tight enough. The scoreline was only 1-0 but we controlled most of the game and played pretty well,” Dickson added.
“We had chances to make it a few more, but Comber are a good side and they have a few good players in their side.
“When it’s 1-0 they always have a chance of nicking a goal and getting back into it.
“But it was a good win for us after a tough enough game. And it’s all about getting into the next round.
“It was a good finish from Ben. He took his goal well. He is a great player for us and always works hard for us.
“He had a couple of other chances as did a couple of other boys, but we didn’t take the ones we created which allowed Comber to stay in the game.”
Reflecting on his man of the match performance, Dickson added: “I got a wee trophy, which was nice.
“I thought my days of getting those awards were long behind me. It has been a very long time since I won anything like that.
“But it was nice to receive it.
“I have played the last few games at centre-half. I am 39 next month so I seem to be getting shifted back. I suppose that’s what happens when you get old.
“The older you get, the further back you go. So I am centre-half.
“But it was a good defensive performance from us. Our other centre-back Jonathan Doey could easily have won man of the match. He was excellent, but unfortunately he went down injured with about 20 minutes to go.”
Only one PIL fixture was played on Saturday with Dollingstown trouncing visitors Tobermore United 5-0 – a brace from Oisin Barr and one apiece from Ben Neill, Liam Toman and Mark McCabe completed the scoring.
SATURDAY’S FIXTURES: Portstewart v Limavady United, Tobermore United v Armagh City, Bangor v Lisburn Distillery, Moyola Park v Banbridge Town, Newingtown v PSNI.
