Ban on ninja swords and new 'Respect Orders' proposed in King's Speech

Ninja swords are set to be banned in a crackdown on knife crime, it was announced on Wednesday.

The weapons were left out of laws prohibiting the sale of machetes and zombie knives under the previous government.

In proposed legislation outlined in the King's Speech, "strict new sanctions" could be placed on senior executives of online retailers who allow the sale of the deadly blades.

The new government also vowed to introduce Respect Orders to tackle "persistent adult offenders" in a revamp of Antisocial Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) and a revived New Labour approach to street crime.

A Crime and Policing Bill will put in place measures to help "halve serious violence over a decade" with a particular focus on knife crime and violence against women and girls, the government said.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: "Legislation will be brought forward to strengthen community policing, give the police greater powers to deal with anti social behaviour and strengthen support for victims."

The Bill also includes plans to:

  • Rebuild neighbourhood policing by bringing forward arrangements to get neighbourhood and Police Community Support Officers back on the beat
  • Expand the powers to intervene in failing police forces and introduce higher mandatory national vetting standards across forces
  • Tackle retail crime by creating a new specific offence of assaulting a shopworker
  • Provide a stronger response to violence against women and girls and strengthen laws on spiking

During the general election campaign, Sir Keir was joined by actor Idris Elba when he met families impacted by violence and knife crime.

The family of Ronan Kanda, who was stabbed to death close to his home in Wolverhampton, were among those who urged Labour to crackdown on the sale of dangerous knives.

The 16-year-old was murdered with a so-called ninja sword by two other teenagers in a case of mistaken identity after he left a friend's house in June 2022.
