Baltimore shooting: Two dead and 28 injured in mass attack as gunshots 'kept going off'

A mass shooting during a "Brooklyn Day" event in Baltimore has left two dead and 28 injured, according to police.

The Baltimore Police Department confirmed there had been a mass shooting in the 800 block of Gretna Avenue on Sunday morning after witnesses told FOX45 News that they heard "20 to 30 shots fired" which "kept going off."

Baltimore Police Department Acting Commissioner Richard Worley confirmed there were a total of 30 victims during a press conference at the scene.

An 18-year-old female was pronounced deceased at the scene and a 20-year-old male later died at a local hospital.

All of the victims were adults. Nine victims were transported by ambulance and 20 victims walked into area hospitals with injuries from the shooting.

The police tweeted at the time of the incident: "BPD is on scene of a [mass] shooting incident in the 800 blk of Gretna Court in our Southern District," authorities said in a statement released on social media regarding the shooting. "Acting Commissioner Worley and PIO are on scene."

Mayor Brandon Scott said they will not stop until the suspect is found: "We will not stop until we find you, and we will find you. Until then, I hope that every single breath you take, that you think about the lives that you took, think about the lives that you impacted here tonight."

No arrests were made immediately after the shooting. Mr Scott asked anyone with information to come forward to assist investigators locate the "cowards" who were responsible for the shooting.

"Treat this as if it were your family," Mr Scott said. "How you would want people to treat it if you were mourning, if this was your neighbourhood, if this was an event in your community that this happened at.

"We want you to treat it that way because that's how we have to treat each other as Baltimoreans.

The crime scene covers multiple flats and is littered with debris after multiple fatalities and dozens of people were injured in the Brooklyn Homes area of South Baltimore.

Residents in the neighbourhood could be seen in videos running away from the scene just before police arrived.
