Residents of a southwest Baltimore neighborhood are expressing outrage following the shooting and killing of a teenager by police officers. The incident, which occurred on Monday night, has sparked anger and concerns about excessive force targeting young Black men.

Authorities have provided limited details about the shooting, which is the third such encounter in Baltimore in recent times. The encounters all began with officers spotting someone on the street whom they believed could be armed, leading to escalated situations.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley stated that the teen displayed characteristics of an armed person and fled when officers attempted to engage with him. After a brief struggle, officers opened fire upon realizing he was in possession of a gun. No officers were injured, and a loaded handgun was recovered from the scene.

Bodycam footage of the incident has not been released, and questions remain unanswered regarding the number of shots fired, the positioning of the wounds, and whether verbal warnings were given before the shooting.

Community members, such as Taavon Bazemore, have criticized the use of force, questioning whether less lethal means could have been employed. Bazemore highlighted concerns about a perceived double standard in law enforcement actions.

The teen's identity has not been publicly disclosed due to privacy laws, but neighbors identified him as a 17-year-old who was known in the area for occasional work at a nearby convenience store.

The teen's mother, Myreshia Macon, expressed frustration over the lack of information provided by the police, stating that she feels blindsided and broken by the situation.

The incident has reignited discussions about police reform in Baltimore, with residents emphasizing the need for increased transparency and accountability within law enforcement.

While recognizing the challenges faced by police officers, community members like Peggy Kallon have expressed heartbreak and disbelief over the shooting, describing the teen as a good kid who was unjustly killed.

Loved ones have created a memorial at the site of the shooting, honoring the teenager's memory with candles, messages, and decorations.
