Ballymena United boss David Jeffrey facing goalkeeping crisis ahead of Carrick trip

Ballymena United boss David Jeffrey is facing a race against time to solve a goalkeeping crisis at the Warden Street Showgrounds.

Jordan Williamson, who had been in impressive form earlier in the season, requires surgery on a knee injury picked up in a recent defeat at Linfield.

And Sam Johnston is also facing a spell on the sidelines after picking up a hip injury in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Warrenpoint Town.

With no experienced third choice shot stopper available, the Ballymena boss is ready to scour the transfer market to fill the void.

United are next in action on Tuesday when they face a trip to Carrick Rangers before welcoming Cliftonville to the Showgrounds on Friday.

“The January window is open and we have a space in the squad, so the work starts now in terms of trying to get someone in for Tuesday,” said Jeffrey.

“Jordan is awaiting surgery for a knee injury he sustained when his foot stuck in the ground playing Linfield at Windsor Park before Christmas.

“And unfortunately Sam also picked up a hip flexor injury while kicking the ball (against Warrenpoint). There was no one near him so it is really unfortunate.

“While kicking the ball he also struck the ground and that has caused the injury. Gary Crosbie, our physio, tells me Sam could be out of action for a minimum of four weeks.”

While Ballymena twice rattled the post after captain Leroy Millar had fired them ahead before the break, it took a smart save from Johnston to deny Warrenpoint a share of the spoils.

Luke Wade-Slater looked odds on to score on the hour mark, but the injured keeper threw out a foot to block the forward’s close range shot.

“It took a great save from an injured Sam Johnston to secure us the three points,” said Jeffrey. “Having said that, it could have been more comfortable.

“We had to tough it out and we’ll play better, but we hit the post on a couple of occasions and I don’t think anyone could say we didn’t deserve it.

“A clean sheet and three points? I have to be very pleased.”
