Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey: Texas roundup

Texas is holding elections, including for state legislative offices, on March 5, 2024. A number of candidates running in these elections completed Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey. These survey responses allow voters to hear directly from candidates about what motivates them to run for office.

Below is a selection of responses from the candidates who filled out the survey as of Dec. 6. To read each candidate’s full responses, click his or her name at the bottom of the article.

Perla Bojorquez (D) is running for Texas House of Representatives District 93, and the Democratic primary is on March 5. Here’s how Bojorquez responded to the question: What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

“Public education is being underfunded in the state of Texas and the Texas Education Agency is allowing harmful legislation to undermine our independent school districts efforts to educate all students. The state of Texas is also allowing efforts to suppress voters by rejecting mail in ballots. This is not very democratic of our current leaders. Marginalized communities are being attacked, isolated, and bullied into corners. Let them live! We all deserve to be respected and to live a life with dignity and peace. Hints our national anthem, ‘…with liberty and justice for ALL.’”

Elizabeth Ginsberg (D) is running for Texas House of Representatives District 108, and the Democratic primary is on March 5. Here’s how Ginsberg responded to the question: What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

“My top issue is the restoration of women’s reproductive rights in Texas. These rights, stripped away by the extremist Republican leadership in Austin, were hard won by my generation and my parents’ generation. … Once elected, I will do everything in my power to advocate for women’s rights, from supporting legislation, to empowering other Democrats to run for office so we can return Texas to a common-sense position on choice.

I am also the product of public education, and I have watched for years as the extremist right has chipped away at funding for public schools, undermining teachers and the vast majority of young people in Texas who rely on public schools. I have been a powerful voice against voucher schemes that would siphon tax dollars away from public schools to private schools that have no accountability. …

I am a firm supporter of the right to bear arms, but I also strongly believe there are common-sense ways to reduce gun violence available to us. Texans overwhelmingly want action on this issue, and I will fight to create needed change.”
