Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey: Indiana roundup

Indiana is holding elections, including for Indianapolis City Council, on Nov. 7, 2023. A number of candidates running in these elections completed Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey. These survey responses allow voters to hear directly from candidates about what motivates them to run for office.

Below is a selection of responses from the candidates who filled out the survey as of Sept. 26. To read each candidate’s full responses, click his or her name at the bottom of the article.

Incumbent Kristin Jones (D), currently representing Indianapolis City Council District 16, is running for Indianapolis City Council District 18, and the general election is on Nov. 7. Here’s how Jones responded to the question: What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

“When I am at the doors and on the phones talking to constituents, the number one issue I hear about is improved roads, trails, sidewalks, curbs, and alleys. During my time on council, we passed a Capital Plan with $1.15 billion allocated for sidewalks, roads, streets and bridges with no tax increases. I have successfully advocated for even more money for infrastructure and flood control in our district. We have a long way to go with infrastructure improvements, but the progress so far has been encouraging and I am happy to say our district is finally getting its much deserved attention.”

Ryan Hughey (D) is running for Indianapolis City Council District 23, and the general election is on Nov. 7. Here’s how Hughey responded to the question: What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

“We need to begin taking care of our citizens better. The bus system needs more support, our homeless citizens need more resources to get back on our feet, and families need assistance to keep their heads above water as inflation and corporate greed continue to put a squeeze on average folks.”
