The results of the 2023 Steam Awards are here and it looks like Larian Studios adds another feather in the cap. Baldur's Gate 3 has been awarded as Game of the Year. That's not all since the game was also named as the Outstanding Story-Rich Game.
Released in August 2023, Baldur's Gate 3 is the third title in the Baldur's Gate series. It's available for the PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. For Game of the Year, it beat out the likes of Resident Evil 4, Lethal Company, Hogwarts Legacy, and EA Sports FC 24.
Other winners of the 2023 Steam Awards were:
- VR Game of the Year: Labyrinthine
- Best Game on Steam Deck: Hogwarts Legacy
- Better with Friends Award: Lethal Company
- Outstanding Visual Style: Atomic Heart
- Most Innovative Gameplay: Starfield
- Best Game You Suck At Award: SIFU
- Best Soundtrack: The Last of Us Part 1
- Sit Back and Relax Award: Dave the Diver
A Surprise Choice
If you're not familiar with the Steam Awards, the way it works is that finalists are chosen through nominations by players who have a Steam account. Unlike other award shows, the Steam Awards limit games to a maximum of two categories which is Game of the Year (or VR Game of the Year) and one other category. Valve chooses the top five games for each category and then players vote.
That said, one of the categories is the "Labor of Love Award." This is for games which have been released for quite some time, but the studio has continued to show their support to it. For this year, the nominees were:
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- Dota 2
- Rust
- Apex Legends
- Deep Rock Galactic
Which game did you think went home with the award? It was none other than Red Dead Redemption 2. This came as a surprise to a lot of people. Now there's no question that the gam is indeed good. The win was a surprise because Rockstar Games actually ended support for the game back in 2022. This was because the studio wanted to focus its resources towards working for GTA 6.
There were also questions on why Starfield was given the Most Innovative Award though some fans have defended this result.
What do you think about the results?
