Baker Mayfield got while the gettin’ was good . . . at least for himself.
Prior to kickoff of Monday night’s matchup between Mayfield’s Los Angeles Rams and the Green Bay Packers, the former No. 1 overall pick revealed why he requested his release from the Carolina Panthers two weeks ago. In an interview with ESPN, Mayfield said the Panthers not only planned on making him the third-string quarterback in Week 12 against the Denver Broncos, but they were also going to designate him as a healthy scratch for the contest.
With Sam Darnold having received his first start of the 2022 campaign that Sunday, Mayfield would’ve went from the top to the bottom of the depth chart that week. PJ Walker, of course, has served as Darnold’s backup.
So, instead, Mayfield and the Panthers thought the best move for both sides was to part ways. The fifth-year passer was then claimed by the Rams the day after his release, started for the defending champions 48 hours after that and led his new team to one of the craziest wins of the season.
Well played, Baker.
