Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield will continue to be a lightning rod for the fanbase until he returns to the field. After leading his team to the playoffs in 2020, Mayfield’s play slipped greatly in 2021 with a major injury a major contributing factor.
On and off the field, Mayfield’s deteriorated relationship with Odell Beckham Jr. became a major storyline last year including the receiver’s father posting a video online criticizing the quarterback’s play.
In the community, Mayfield has been highly engaged. Recently, he surprised a Florida soccer team on their way to their state championship game. Last Thanksgiving, he was a part of serving meals to the people of Cleveland. He also hosts his summer youth football camp.
Mayfield’s willingness to share with kids continued this offseason as PGA Tour star Brooks Koepka took time with a child, Ethan, suffering from a rare form of cancer. During Koepka’s conversation with Ethan he learned that he was a big Mayfield fan.
Koepka texted Mayfield who shortly after got on a video call with Ethan and Koepka while they were on a golf course: (Skip to 2:05 of the video for the Mayfield section but the whole story is worth your time)

Given all the negative stories that permeate sports, it is important to highlight the positive ones as well. Good on Mayfield for responding so quickly to Koepka’s invitation and taking the time to talk to Ethan.
