The Great British Bake Off returned to our screens on Tuesday evening with a cheeky Star Wars skit, which left fans exuberant that the Channel 4 favourite was back.
GBBO fans have been eager for the hotly anticipated new series, which once again features hosts Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas alongside judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.
The four hit screens in a Star Wars-themed skit, kicked off with the infamous rolling credits reading: “A long time ago in a tent far, far away… well, earlier this year in Berkshire.”
Matt Lucas was seen billed as ‘Luke Piewalker’, while Noel Fielding was ‘Princess Layer Cake – complete with bagel buns at the side of his head.
Their co-hosts Prue, playing ‘Prubacker’, and Paul as ‘Darth Baker’ then appeared in similar cosplay getups for the tongue-in-cheek sketch.
Bake Off fans were ecstatic the show was back and took to Twitter to celebrate, with one writing: “I too just want cry, so happy Bake-off is back,” as another said: “I would actually love it if these 4 did a whole comedy sketch show filled with Bake Off puns.”
One said: “I am so happy GBBO is back,” as another added: “My favourite comfort show GBBO is back - yay!”
“The GBBO is back and suddenly everything feels wonderful,” another tweeted.
There were brief doubts over whether the series would air as planned, amid fears it could be delayed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
A handful of hopeful amateur bakers descended on the infamous white tent to put their baking and pastry skills to the test as they try to prove their worth in the kitchen.
From breads to biscuits to cakes and of course showstoppers, there are some big tests in store for the group.
The Great British Bake Off returned this week after two years away due to the Covid pandemic, which put huge restrictions on filming and meant everyone had to operate in a Covid bubble.
Ahead of the new series, Paul warned the new set of amateur bakers, saying: “You need to be very brave to do Bake Off as you have to come in front of Prue and myself and be timed.
“It takes a lot of bottle to go into that tent and bake. The timing is the hardest part to deal with.
“I will walk away if they say, ‘Please go away’ but it is incredible to watch them turn from amateurs to professionals. I used to be involved with the auditions but now we can get 20,000 people auditioning and I can’t eat that much cake so I wait until I see them in the tent. I would rather see them fresh in the tent.”
