Bahrain strongly condemned on Monday the burning of copies of the Holy Quran by extremists in Sweden, in what it said was an act of provocation to Muslims.

The move is a grave insult to Muslims and incites hatred and violence, said the kingdom's foreign ministry, reported the state news agency (BNA).

It stressed that such abhorrent practices that contradict freedom of religions, beliefs and coexistence should be strongly condemned by the international community.

The ministry called for concerted efforts to consolidate the values of tolerance, coexistence and religious freedoms, to combat extremism and fanaticism, and to prevent violations against all religions and beliefs.
