Baggage handlers filmed throwing Qantas luggage at Melbourne Airport sacked by Swissport

Two baggage handlers who were filmed hurling luggage at Melbourne Airport have been sacked.

The video shows three workers picking up bags from a Qantas container and throwing them onto the belt.

Employer Swissport said two team members "were handling customer luggage in an unacceptable manner".

A spokesperson for the multinational cargo services provider said the company launched an "urgent" investigation after the video footage was uploaded to social media.

The staff in question were stood down pending the investigation.

"The unacceptable behaviour of a few individuals will not be allowed to tarnish the quality work of our whole team," the spokesperson said in a statement.

"Swissport trains and manages all staff to handle customer possessions with care and diligence.

"Our 3000-strong team across the network works hard to ensure these standards are upheld.

"It is important that when those standards are breached by a small group of individuals that we take action."

Swissport also conducted a briefing to remind staff "of the high standards we expect, and enforce".

Footage widely shared on social media

The workers in the video appear to laugh and joke as they pick the suitcases up and throw them with force.

The footage was shared widely across multiple social media platforms and was met with heavy criticism. The ABC has not been able to verify the original source of the video.

In a note to staff, issued earlier this month, Swissport Australasian CEO Brad Moore said he had received "many messages from team members across the network" who had shared his concerns about the conduct in the footage.

"The behaviours in the video let all of us down - most importantly our frontline staff," the note said.
