BAFTAs 2022: It's A Sin fans 'baffled' after clips 'muted' and awards snub

Fans of Russell T. Davies' powerful series, It's A Sin, have been left 'fuming' and 'disappointed' after the destigmatising show left the BAFTAs last night empty-handed and clips were 'muted' during the ceremony. With Years and Years star Olly Alexander playing the main role of Ritchie Tozer, It's A Sin was a hit with viewers when it aired in 2021, with those in the LGBTQ+ community especially commending the drama for its LGBT cast and for breaking down the stigma attached to HIV/AIDS.

It's A Sin was nominated for five awards last night, more than any other show being celebrated at BAFTA TV Awards 2022. The categories the progressive programme was nominated for included Best Miniseries, Leading Actor (Olly Alexander), Supporting Actor (Callum Scott Howells, David Carlyle, Omari Douglas), Leading Actress (Lydia West), and Must-See Moment (Colin's heartbreaking AIDS diagnosis).

Despite winning two theatrical faces at the BAFTA Craft Awards, fans were shocked when the critically acclaimed drama left last night's ceremony empty handed, after being expected to sweep the board. Further frustration came as fans noticed that the BBC appeared to mute clips of It's A Sin as the nominations for each category were announced, which some assumed to be a technical glitch while others speculated it was due to the speech being censored pre-watershed.

It's A Sin fans expressed their anger towards the situation on social media. Rob Anderson said: "The fact that It's A Sin created such an incredible conversion around HIV/Aids, was one of the most talked about dramas last year and has walked away empty handed tonight with the BBC muting every clip is utterly baffling."

Patrick Mulkern wrote: "I’m appalled that #ItsASin came away completely empty-handed from the #BAFTAS and that the BBC muted dialogue in the brief clips chosen. @BBCOne @BAFTA"

TV critic Scott Bryan tweeted: "It’s a Sin won two awards at the BAFTA Craft Awards this year - for Best Editor and Director. Yet is ASTOUNDING that they won nothing at the BAFTA TV Awards tonight. I am speechless.

"One of the most necessary, powerful, life-affirming dramas in recent years, shining a light on LGBTQ+ history and receiving viewer and critical acclaim. And yet no awards tonight.

"It’s A Sin will be a drama that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. Know I’m far from the only one. I’m still angry about all of this and will be for a long time.

"An upside was that *many* people at the ceremony thought the same thing: it was the talking point of the whole evening."

Prior to the ceremony, Olly Alexander gushed over being reunited with his castmates from It's A Sin. The star wrote: "It was a massive privilege to play Ritchie - I know he’s a fictional character but - his story, it really did happen.

"He’s just one tiny example of the way HIV has impacted peoples lives. Being in It’s A Sin and playing Ritchie (i loved him so much even when he was really annoying) - it meant a lot to me in so many many ways and it will forever! i’m so grateful for this experience!"
