The British Academy has revealed the latest updates to its rules for the upcoming 2025 BAFTA Film Awards. These changes aim to enhance the fairness and inclusivity of the prestigious awards ceremony.
One of the notable additions is the introduction of a new award category for children's and family films. This award will recognize films that appeal to a wide audience, including children, young people, and adults.
Additionally, a points-based system has been implemented for the outstanding British film category to streamline the nomination process. This system will consider factors such as the nationality of candidates and key department heads.
Furthermore, the requirements for films to qualify for the best film category have been expanded. Films must now be theatrically exhibited on at least 50 commercial screens in the U.K. for a minimum of seven days.
Changes have also been made to the nomination process, with the director chapter now responsible for determining the longlist and nominations. The performance categories have undergone a voting update, with all nominations now being determined by BAFTA's acting chapter.
The definition of the documentary category has been refined to include predominantly non-fiction films intended for theatrical release. Films must creatively explore various themes without dramatized factual subjects.
To ensure fair consideration for all titles, members will receive a random selection of 15 films before voting in Round One. Additionally, films must provide information on bullying and harassment policies and sustainability measures during production.
The 2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, February 16, 2025. Last year's winners included Oppenheimer with seven awards and Poor Things with five.
