Baffling penalty decision sees Newcastle denied third Elland Road spot-kick as Sam Allardyce moans

Newcastle United may have been awarded two penalties at Leeds United but there is an overwhelming feeling they were unlucky not to receive another spot-kick in the 2-2 draw at Elland Road.

The Magpies left with a point after a gritty Leeds side frustrated Eddie Howe's Champions League-chasing men on the road. After a slow start, Newcastle were handed a lifeline when Callum Wilson got the chance to equalise from the penalty spot.

He made no mistake after watching Patrick Bamford miss three minutes earlier at the other end. The Newcastle No 9 scored his second penalty of the game after the interval before Leeds grabbed a late equaliser.

However, on another day Newcastle would have been awarded a third penalty - with Wilson seemingly fouled by Weston McKennie shortly before half-time. The Toon striker attempted to control a bouncing ball as McKennie jumped all over him, forcing him to the ground.

Newcastle fans were baffled as to why VAR hadn't intervened on the incident shortly before the half-time whistle. On another day, the travelling side would have been given that decision.

Asked whether he thought it was penalty, BT Sport pundit Jermaine Jenas said: "I do, yeah. This is reckless from McKennie, and this kind of fed into this whole thing that Leeds are a little bit too pumped up here.

"It’s clumsy, jumping on the back of any centre forward in the box, getting nowhere near the ball, running straight into the back of them. He’s a lucky boy."

Leeds have been under Sam Allardyce's control for two games and have conceded three penalties in that time. The Whites boss bemoaned his side's decision making in their own 18-yard box at full-time.

"We have to stop giving penalties away, because we gave one away last week as well," Allardyce said at full-time. "I’ve been talking about staying on your feet all week and obviously I don’t like it when they ignore me, so they’ll get told off next week, believe you me. Had we stayed on our feet today, I think we might have won this game."
