A baby tragically passed away in Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital just weeks after his first birthday earlier this month.
Layton Holdcroft, just 12 months old, sadly died on June 8. He had been admitted to the hospital on June 6, having been transferred from Royal Blackburn Hospital earlier on the same day, an inquest opening heard this morning (June 29).
Area coroner Zak Golombeck confirmed that Layton suffered a trio of medical issues in the days leading up to his death. They were septic shock, breathing difficulties, and a fever.

“Layton Holdcroft sadly died on June 8, 2023 in Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. I have a statement from Police Coroner’s Officer Joseph Keyes,” Mr Golombeck said in a short hearing. “It confirms he was born on May 16, 2022 and his next of kin is mother, Tia Lowe,” he continued in court room one at Manchester coroners court.
“The circumstances are that on June 6, Layton was admitted to Royal Blackburn Hospital with septic shock, a fever, and increased difficulty in breathing. He was transferred to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH) later on June 6 for more treatment where he sadly died.
“On June 16, the Police Coroner's Officer contacted the mother who confirmed that her son was a patient at the hospital and [was] present at his death.
“I have had the opportunity to consider a report by the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital with reference to his death and medical history. Taking into account all the evidence, which includes a statement from the Police Coroner's Officer, I recognise Tia Lowe as an interested person.
“I will require further evidence from the treating clinician at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital with a medical cause of death. Once that file has been received more formal directions will be made.”
