Baby Shark song makes top 40 on Billboard 100 ranking

"Baby Shark", a popular children's song, has landed on the 32nd place of Billboard's Hot 100 chart. ( YouTube / Pinkfong! Kids' Songs & Stories )

"Baby Shark", the infamous nursery rhyme, has landed a spot on Billboard's Hot 100 ranking.

The version of the song performed by Pinkfong, a South Korean children's entertainment company, is ranked 32nd on the website's list dated 12 January.

"Baby Shark", known for its earworm potential, has got more than two billion views on Pinkfong's YouTube channel.

It comes right after Luke Combs's "She Got the Best of Me" in Billboard's ranking, and before "Close To Me" by Ellie Goulding and Diplo, featuring rapper Swae Lee.

The song itself predates Pinkfong, but the company's version is the one that landed on Billboard's Hot 100 list after shooting to viral fame.

Its popularity was helped by the emergence of a Baby Shark Challenge asking participants to dance to the song.

During the week ending 3 January, "Baby Shark" recorded 20.8 million streams, according to Billboard. Video views accounted for 73 per cent of those.

Billboard started taking streams into account in 2014, moving away from a purely sales-based approach.

In May 2018, it started giving more weight to plays on paid-for subscription services – or hybrid platforms that use a mix of paid subscriptions and ad revenue – such as Apple Music, Spotify and SoundCloud, more weight than plays on exclusively ad-supported services such as YouTube.

This suggests that "Baby Shark"'s billions of YouTube views were given less weight than when the song was played on other, paid-for platforms – but the song still swam to the 32nd place of the ranking.
