An inquest has revealed the heartbreaking story of how a mother and father were made to feel like “over-anxious parents” after their baby boy collapsed just three days after being sent home from the hospital. Freddie Beaumont, who was just three weeks shy of his second birthday, suffered a cardiac arrest at his home and was rushed to Salford Royal Hospital but tragically could not be saved.
The incident took place after Freddie, described by his mother as a “very smiley little boy,” had been discharged from the pediatric department of the hospital just a few hours earlier. During his visit to Salford Royal on November 19, 2022, a doctor diagnosed him with bronchiolitis, a common lung infection. However, following his death, a post-mortem found that Freddie had died from a Strep A infection, leading his devastated mother to question the initial diagnosis and care he received, reported Daily Record.
Mrs. Beaumont, a mother from Worsley, expressed her concerns in Bolton Coroner’s Court, explaining that Freddie’s symptoms were not taken seriously during his first visit. “It was clear things weren’t right,” she said. She explained that Freddie had previously been hospitalized with bronchiolitis in 2022 and had required antibiotics and follow-up visits from nurses.
In the days before his death, Freddie showed signs of illness, including a high temperature and noisy breathing, which prompted his mother to take him to a walk-in center. However, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the center did not treat chest-related cases and suggested they contact a GP instead.
Freddie was then referred to the pediatric unit at Salford Royal Hospital, where Mrs. Beaumont said she and her husband were made to feel as though they were “over-anxious parents being fussy when we should have been a bit more relaxed.” Despite their concerns, Freddie was discharged after being seen by pediatric consultant Dr. Raja Syahanee, who diagnosed him with bronchiolitis and reassured the parents that it was nothing out of the ordinary.
“I did try to explain he will smile at you now, but he’s not right,” Mrs. Beaumont said, describing Freddie’s condition as “a lot worse than we had ever heard it.” She added that the family had hoped for further tests or antibiotics to help Freddie feel better, but their concerns were dismissed.
In the hours following his discharge, Freddie’s condition deteriorated. He was “unsettled” and had “noisy breathing.” The following morning, Freddie’s condition worsened, and after he stopped breathing, Mrs. Beaumont performed CPR until paramedics arrived. He was rushed back to the hospital, but despite extensive resuscitation efforts, Freddie was declared dead.
A post-mortem confirmed that Freddie died from acute empyema and pneumonia caused by a Group A Streptococcus infection. Mrs. Beaumont has since expressed her desire for the inquest to answer questions about the care Freddie received, particularly regarding the lack of further tests, antibiotic prescriptions, and monitoring during his hospital visit.
The Beaumont family hopes that the inquest will shed light on whether Freddie should have been kept in the hospital for further observation and treatment.
