The force said that an investigation into the cause of the death is being carried out. However this is a normal protocol to be carried out by police.

A spokesperson for Merseyside police said: "Police are in attendance in Aigburth following the unexplained death of a baby yesterday, Sunday 13 March. Emergency services were called to an address on Rosslyn Street yesterday evening.

"The baby was taken to hospital but sadly passed away. A detailed examination of the circumstances will be carried out, as per normal police procedures."
