Baby choking risk warning as half teething rings and toys fail safety test

Babies could be at risk of choking on teething toys after it was revealed that half of the items had failed safety tests.

Consumer watchdog Which? carried out the tests on 15 products to see if they could be could be swallowed.

The chew toys also underwent a test that examined if a teether could block the throat of a child too young to sit up.

Five products sold on Amazon that failed tests have been taken down by the online retailer after the results were published.

They were Silvio Baby Teether and Toothbrush, Gupamiga Baby Toothbrush Teether Infant Toothbrush Corn, Icebleuor Giraffe Baby Teether, SLGOL Baby Silicone Teething Toys and Gummee Glove.

Slumber-roo.co.uk  has removed Moustache Teether while a probe is done by Jellystone Designs.

But the maker of Matchstick Monkey Blue Monkey Teething Toy denied it was unsafe.

Gummee said: “Safety is at the heart of Gummee Glove.”

Which? said the proportion of failed tests was “shocking”.

An Amazon spokesperson says: "All sellers must follow our selling guidelines and those who do not will be subject to action including potential removal of their account. The products in question are no longer available."
