In addition to the coaching cycle, the future of quarterbacks around the NFL is a common offseason topic. For some quarterbacks, like Kirk Cousins, a new home is likely on the horizon.
Then you have quarterbacks who are entering a critical year and are considered to be on the hot seat. Bleacher Report’s Maurice Moton has a list of quarterbacks on the hot seat in 2024, including Derek Carr.
The interesting thing about Carr’s hot seat is he may not even be on that seat for long. After spending the last two seasons struggling with the Saints, Derek Carr has already lost the favor of the fans. How much longer the decision makers will be able to last is another question. Mickey Loomis told the media the next head coach would make the decision on Carr’s future in New Orleans.
Carr’s departure comes with a hefty dead cap hit of $51.1 million if he’s released. That could deter a coach from moving on from Carr and would keep Carr for at least a year.
If the Saints decide to not make a change at quarterback, Carr is appropriately on the list of quarterbacks on the hot seat. Moton believes the new coaches could pull Carr quickly if they “don’t think he’s doing enough to uplift his supporting cast.”
Moton also pointed to Carr’s recent comments putting a bigger target on his back. Pointing to his film was a risky move for him and should reasonably make people want more from the quarterback. People shouldn’t just mean the fan base. It should include the coaches and front office as well.
