B&M shoppers revel in nostalgia as cult £1 sweets discontinued 20 years ago now back on shelves

B&M shoppers are in a nostalgia frenzy after the shop announced the return of a much-loved retro sweet that was discontinued more than 20 years ago. The bargain retailer posted a picture of a bag of Opal Fruits taken from the shelves priced at just £1.

The packet appears to state that the sweets are 'limited edition' and include the original flavours. The comeback comes 23 years after Opal Fruits became Starburst to match the US and blackcurrant replaced the much-loved citrus.

Shoppers were ecstatic and took to the comment section of Twitter to welcome them back.

@thephilsblogbar said: "I love the Opal Fruits, the lime flavour, also as a bonus the tropical Opal Fruits or Summer fruits would be nice, was never a big fan of the strawberry mix."

@cloudymanday said: "Always fingers crossed for a high proportion of green ones. Always my favourite."

@osteogenesis said: "Made to make your mouth water, according to the advert I remember from years ago."

The original flavours consist of strawberry, lemon, orange and lime whereas Starburst includes a combined lemon and lime sweet, plus a blackcurrant chew. Some couldn't see the world of difference between the two cult candies however.

@cynormical added: "They literally are starburst in different packaging. In fact it's what starburst were before starburst. They just bring the old packaging back for the oldies.

Others were quick to point out the difference, @shona285 replied: "Opal fruits had 4 flavours, starburst only have 3."

Jason Ingham added: "People keep telling me Opal Fruits and Starburst are the same, they are so wrong!"

Shopper also wanted the bargain retailer to bring back other retro items such as Brannigans Roast Beef and Mustard crisps, Spangles sweets, Pacers Sweets, Tab Clear Coca-Cola and now Lilt.
