Azamgarh: Shibli College students' union president arrested for fanning hatred, provocative speech

VARANASI: The president of Shibli College students union Abdul Rehman was arrested by police in Azamgarh district on Sunday after he delivered provocative speech outside the college gate on Saturday night.

He was upset over BJP spokespersons Nupur Sharma’s alleged remarks on Prophet Muhammad.

SP Azamgarh Anurag Arya said that some video of the provocative speech of a youth had gone viral on social media when the cyber cell cops took note of it and started investigation. During initial investigation it came to light that youth visible in video delivering speech in front of Shibli College gate was its students' union president Abdul Rehman, he said adding, after it police started interrogating him.

During initial police interrogation Rehman divulged that he was upset with BJP national spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s alleged remarks on Prophet Muhammad made during a recent television news channel debate on Gyanvapi mosque case. In the video he could be seen making derogatory remarks for 80 crore people by mentioning that he keep them under the toes of his shoe.

ASP City Azamgarh Shailendra Lal said that following proper investigation a case was lodged against Rehman under section 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) for fanning hatred with his speech.
